Would-be robber “rehabilitated”
From the Houston Chronicle:
A male teen was fatally shot and two others are in custody after they apparently confronted a delivery driver late last night in southeast Houston.
The shooting occurred about 11 p.m. Thursday in the 8600 block of Martin Luther King Blvd.
The teen, who has not been identified, was shot at least once, police said.
Investigators said a vendor was delivering products to a store when three confronted him and asked him to give them some of the items. He refused and they began beating him.
The vendor pulled out a handgun and shot one of them.
Emphasis mine ….
Asked ? Really ? Oh, and I suppose it just wasn’t relevant to the story that the delivery driver is licensed to carry the handgun.
“Cash for Clunkers” Suspended
From USA Today:
Automakers have ordered millions of dollars in television ads. Dealers had the hot dogs, balloons and full-page Sunday ads in the newspapers ready to pounce on sales opportunities. And it is all in vain: the “Cash for Clunkers” program is on hold.
This would have been the first full weekend for the program. It was only last Monday that Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood officially kicked it off. Lots of momentum will be lost from the suspension, confirmed moments ago by sources.
This is why you shouldn’t let government do anything important.
UPDATE:
From Yahoo:
Some car shoppers are finding that their trade-in vehicles, which qualified for a Cash for Clunkers rebate last week, don’t this week thanks to changes in the EPA’s fuel economy ratings.
In some cases, car buyers say, dealers are backing out of sales they’ve already made because the EPA changed the fuel economy figures on their trade-in.
Ever hear the saying, “If the government can’t fuck it up, then it can’t be fucked up.” ? This is where sayings like that come from.
What would you do ?
I was having a conversation with a buddy from overseas about artificial intelligence (AI, computers) controlling front-line military units (tanks specifically). He asked how do you tell the good guys from the bad guys. I stated that computers are already pretty damned good at identifying targets, but added that the surest way to ID an enemy is whether or not it is shooting at you.
His response was, “so you don’t shoot. You wait for the tank to approach and put a ‘briefcase’ under it”. Well, that introduces a question. I know how close I’d let the briefcase get.
How close do you let the briefcase get ?
Ties are just too damned dangerous
From BBC:
More than 400 people have joined a group on Facebook, demanding that traditional ties be restored at McAuley Catholic High School in Doncaster.
Schools across the UK are said to be switching ties over safety fears.
The protesters said the move was a “pathetic waste of money”. The school is closed for the summer holidays and no-one was available for comment.
Heh. What more can I say ? I still think bicycle helmets are stupid.
Nobody wants big trucks, except for the hundreds of thousands that buy them.
From ABC:
But for the US automotive industry – damaged by foreign competition, rising gas prices, and hesitant consumers – “small” might be getting even smaller. Microcars loom large on the horizon, as many companies are investing in, or at least considering, lightweight, economical, and quirky vehicles that are most often associated with zigzagging down European side streets – not keeping pace with semi trucks as they barrel down US highways.
The AP has:
Also, the company’s F-Series pickup trucks remain the best-selling vehicles in the country.
So we’re supposed to believe that everybody wants the tiny little shitbox cars.
On a side note, a guy that works at the same place I work (I really wouldn’t call him a co-worker) bought one of those “Smart” cars (really looks like a dumbass car to me). He was bitching about the cost of repairing some scratches on the roof caused when someone attached a giant windup key to the roof of his car.

This thing is fucking retarded.
Man sets self on fire
From BBC:
Taser-hit man burst into flames
A man in Western Australia was engulfed in flames when police officers fired a Taser stun gun at him.
Police say they used the Taser on Ronald Mitchell, 36, when he ran at them carrying a container of petrol and a cigarette lighter.
They said that Mr Mitchell, who lives in a remote Aboriginal community, had been sniffing petrol. They suggested the cigarette lighter started the fire.
Mr Mitchell is in a critical condition in hospital with third degree burns.
Aside from the obvious funny here, what the fuck is up with the headline. I mean, right there in the article they blame the cigarette lighter for staring the fire, but that sure as shit ain’t what the headline implies. Fuckers.
Death Row Inmate Dies of Natural Causes After 29 Years on Death Row
From Patterico:
A 55-year-old inmate who was on death row at San Quentin State Prison for the kidnapping and killing two Southern California girls died of natural causes early Friday morning.
For fuck’s sake. You’re doing it WRONG!
The Science is Settled
Most likely, this summer’s Gulf dead zone will blanket about 7,980 square miles, roughly the same size as last year’s zone, Scavia said. That would put the years 2009, 2008 and 2001 in a virtual tie for second place on the list of the largest Gulf dead zones.
The 3,000 square miles is one of the smallest measurements of the zone since measurements began in 1985, according to a graph in a news release sent from a research vessel in the Gulf. Only those in 1987, 1988 and 2000 were smaller.
You know, honestly, at some point we’re going to have to realize that most of these “scientists” don’t know what the fuck they’re talking about.

Booze of the Week

Absolut Mango and 7up. This is another drink simple enough to make no matter how drunk you are. This one may sound a bit “girly” but it really is a good drink. Even if you’re not into vodka, you should give this one a go.
