Booze of the Week
The BotW is a bit of a combination of booze and cocktails. I’m still working through the gin section and I’m currently on Beefeater. I’ve about a half a fifth left. This morning I’m drinking a Tom Collins.
My first Tom Collins is:
2oz Gin
1oz lemon juice
1tsp simple syrupShaken with ice, strained into a tall glass half filled with ice. Top with club soda.
This is a very light drink. It is less bitter than a gin and tonic but leans more towards sour with the 1oz of lemon juice. The taste is decent, but I think at these measurements, the lemon just obliterates the taste of the gin.
Most of the recipes tend to vary in garnish. I used none. As the morning progresses, I’ll play with the mix a bit to see what ratios I like best. I will update this post as needed.
As a small reminder: I get that it seems odd to be hitting the bottle at 7am but I work nights and just got off of work. So, for me, it is early evening.
Ok, Tom Collins #2:
3oz gin
1oz lemon juice
2tsp simple syrupShaken with ice, strained into a tall glass half filled with ice. Top with club soda.
I added another shot of gin and a bit more syrup (to cut the lemon juice a bit). This made for a bit more in the shaker and a bit less room in the glass for the soda. Taste-wise, I think this one is better. I can taste the gin in this one. The extra gin and the extra sugar helps cut the sour a bit. Of course for those that like a stronger lemon flavor the first one would obviously be preferable.
Ok, Tom Collins #3
2oz gin
1/2oz lemon juice
2tsp simple syrupShaken with ice, strained into a tall glass half filled with ice. Top with club soda.
I cut down on both the gin and the lemon juice in order to de-sour it. Verdict: nope. It pretty much loses all taste at this point. Its about like drinking soda water with a hint of gin and lemon. So, still the current favorite is #2.
Yep, after revisiting #2, that is my favorite Tom Collins. It is official. Everyone update your recipes accordingly.

Not a big fan of gin, but I would cut down on the lemon juice anyway making it 2-1/2-2 ratio, since I like sweet.
I am what I drink
And I too am a midshifter.
“How can you be drinking in the morning!”
“It’s my afternoon.”
Hmmm….ok, tried the second recipe, ArmedGeek, and you are right…again.
DAMNIT!!!
Something that I came across last night was Red Stag by Jim Beam, you might want to check this one out if you can find it.
I looked up the Red Stag, it certainly sounds different. I’ll see if my liquor store has that.
Wait…you skipped the garnish? But that’s part of the fun!
[...] odder liquors I’ve decided to try. I picked this up on the advice of semi-regular commenter Moses. This should also serve as warning that I might just ban his ass if this stuff sucks. | Tags: [...]
