Girlie Drink of the Week

Posted by LC Aggie Sith on Tuesday, January 12, 2010 in Booze Links, BOTW

Much ado has been made on these threads about tequila. Ok, maybe not much. ArmedGeek is not a big fan of it, and I tend to get sick if I drink it. However, perusing a website recommended by Nicole, via The One Armed Man, I did find a recipe for a Chambord Margarita. I am not a big fan of margaritas, but decided to give it another try. I found several different variations of the drink at Chili’s, and imbibed one (ok, three), and found it pretty delicious, as in “Whoa!” I recommend this one on the rocks, as opposed to frozen, simply due to the beautiful color. That, and you can drink it faster on the rocks.

1 oz. Gold Tequila
1/2 oz. Triple Sec
1/2 oz. Chambord
3 oz. Margarita Mix

Shake with ice, serve on a salt-rimmed glass over ice, garnish with lime.

Now, in the liquor cabinet I have Patrón Añejo, Tequila Reserva 1800 Añejo, and an itty bitty bottle of Patrón Silver. The 1800 has a gorgeous amber color, and the aroma has hints of spices. However, it is not a tequila I recommend for a sweet drink. It has a nutty flavor to it, and in my opinion it conflicted with the flavor of the Chambord.  After about an hour (to let me sober up and to let my palate readjust), I tried the Patrón Añejo. If gold were a clear liquid, that would be the color of this tequila. It is a blend of tequilas, aged in white oak barrels. This one has a citrus aroma, and a woodsy taste. Blended much better with the Chambord, in my opinion. Again, after another hour, I tried the Patrón Silver. The aroma was sweeter than the Patrón Añejo, like vanilla, and the taste was smooth, reminiscent of citrus. By this time I was past measuring, so I eyeballed it. It was good, but not strong enough to complement the Chambord. So, what I got out of this is: 1800 is great on the rocks, slowly savored, Patrón Añejo is great stand alone or in mixed drinks, and Patrón Silver is great for doing shots. Again, I’m a novice at this sort of thing, so take my opinion with a rim of salt.

And remember to drink plenty of water and take some painkillers before crashing ;)

Tequila never has been my favorite drink since an unfortunate incident when I was 15 but for some reason the desirability of the tequila went up as the price went down. Cheap tequila all the way.

Didn’t work for my boss while in Mexico though – he and the other boss got bad rashes after drinking it.

It certainly does have a great color to it. Your photo?

  3. No, LK…creatively borrowed from http://www.thoughtfullysimple.com ;)

Of the ones I made, the Silver had the prettiest color…probably because the tequila is light!

Speaking of cheap tequila….last Christmas while at my folks, my dad was telling me of a bottle he received as a gift. He doesn’t drink tequila, so he just keeps it in the back of the cabinet, still in the gift bag. Turns out it is this:

He got the half bottle of it, 375 ml size. Yeah, I’m swiping it next time I go to my folks. For the bottle alone ;)

Never was a bit tequila drinker either. Has anyone here ever eaten the worm they put in some bottles? I always wondered what that tasted like. Probably tequila.

  5. Technically Enas, it’s Mezcal that comes with a worm. The worm is actually the larva of a moth that likes to live on the agaves.

If you do find a worm in tequila, there is something seriously wrong ;)

  6. Enas Yorl says:

Ah, ok. I toldja I didn’t know nuthin’ ’bout drinkin’ no tequila.

The One Armed Man doesn’t do tequila. He says it tastes like jail. He also adds that the worm isn’t a taste so much as a shitty texture. Back in high school his crowd had a rule that whoever finished the bottle had to eat the worm. Then they decided everyone was being pussies and not drinking a lot so they didn’t have to eat the worm. Thus, the new rule of worm must be eaten first – it can’t get any worse after that he said. :)

Me, my enjoyment of margaritas is limited to the super low tequila content frozen ones that they make for the freebies at the low end Vegas casinos. :)

  8. He says it tastes like jail.

I don’t care who you are, that right there is FUNNY!!!

Did his friends decide to do the Scott Glenn trick in Urban Cowboy, where he puts the opening of the bottle against his tongue, flips the bottle up, and lets the worm fall to the opening, so he can eat it first?

Ick….I feel queasy just recalling it.

  9. Lemur King says:

“Tastes like jail” is just another graphic wanting to happen. Oh, I love that one, Nicole.

I have eaten a worm from a bottle of mezcal that was so damn cheap that they paid you to take it. It was like eating a loogie from an ashtray that hadn’t been emptied in about three years.

Shortly after that I remember standing there and letting a buddy shoot me in the breastbone with a paintgun from about 15 feet away. Then… well… I don’t know. They tell me lots happened but I couldn’t tell you what.

  10. Nicole says:

They didn’t do the tongue on the bottle, they used a thumb instead. Held the bottle upside down and waited for the worm to float down. Blech. I don’t even wanna eat a worm that has been deep fried and coated in enough stuff that you can’t tell it is a worm. Can’t even imagine one that is still squishy.

I was never a big tequila drinker, then (through work) I got the chance to try some very good tequila. It was….well…very good. Very light, very drinkable.

I believe with tequila you get what you pay for. Or, maybe you just end up paying for it later.

  12. Most people tend to think they do pay for it later, Fiveofclubs :D

  13. Sounds like this could be a good drink, but I think I’ll stick to beer.

Nothing like a Young’s Double Chocolate Stout!
