Movies 2009

Posted by ArmedGeek on Sunday, January 10, 2010 in Entertainment

Well, I guess since everyone else is doing it, I may as well throw something together. I am not a movie critic. I can either give a thumbs up or down or write a fucking book on why a movie is good or bad, I can’t seem to find any middle ground there.

My Favorite Movie of 2009: Zombieland.

I know, I know, that sounds soooo odd. 1) Zombieland was funny and entertaining, 2) It added new ideas (the rules) to zombie movies, 3) (this is the big one) I honestly can’t think of anything that could be added or removed to make the movie substantially better.

Here’s the list of 2009 movies that I have seen (in no particular order):

Yonkers Joe
Good movie. Not great, but you certainly won’t feel you’ve wasted the time watching it.
My Bloody Valentine 3D
This movie gets points for returning to the classic splatter film formula. Lots of blood and gore, and gratuitous nudity.
Paul Blart: Mall Cop
Sucked ass.
Underworld: Rise of the Lycans
Meh.
Taken
Too short. I’d have like to have seen the “hunt” go on longer. Finding the bad guys was just too quick and easy.
Watchmen
Damned good flick.
I Love You, Man
I was suprised at how good a movie this one was.
Knowing
Cool idea, ending sucked.
The Great Buck Howard
Meh. Good movie, but didn’t really “do it for me”.
Monsters vs. Aliens
Cute show. Mostly like every other computer animated movie.
Observe and Report
Worth watching, bit disturbing really.
The Mutant Chronicles
Way better than most gave it credit for. A heavily CGI-ed comic book-ish “save the world” movie.
X-Men Origins: Wolverine
Meh. Could have been better. Worth watching if you like X-Men.
Star Trek
Honestly, I thought it couldn’t be done. Could have lived with fewer lens flares.
Land of the Lost
Want-to-poke-your-eyeballs-out level of bad.
The Hangover
Way Way Way Way Way overrated.
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
Surprising level of suck.
Funny People
Good movie. I can only tolerate Adam Sandler when he’s not playing the retard.
Inglourious Basterds
The only reason critics liked this movies was because none of them wanted to be the guy that said a Quentin Tarentino film sucked ass.
Extract
Not bad, but not Office Space.
Zombieland
Oddly, while not a GreatFilmTM this one is probably my favorite for the year mostly because I can’t think of anything that would have made it better.
Law Abiding Citizen
Excellent film until the last few minutes. Again, ending sucked.
Up
Best thing about this film was the opening.
Shrink
Odd movie. Not bad but I wouldn’t go out of my way to see it.
The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard
Funny, stupid.

Here’s a list of movies from 2009 that I have not seen, but that I intend to see.

Fanboys
Looks funny.
Adventureland
Everyone else seems to like it.
State of Play
Not real sure how I’ve missed this one.
Powder Blue
Everyone seems to like it.
Terminator Salvation
Cause I’ve seen the rest of them.
Drag Me to Hell
Looks interesting.
Moon
Looks interesting.
The Hurt Locker
Everone seems to like it.
Public Enemies
Not sure about this one.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
I’ve seen the rest of them.
A Perfect Getaway
Milla Jovovich
Gamer
Looks interesting.
Surrogates
Bruce Willis
A Serious Man
Critics say I should see it.
The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day
Saw the first one.
The Men Who Stare at Goats
Looks interesting.
Pirate Radio
Not sure about this one either.
Everybody’s Fine
Robert Deniro
Up in the Air
I like dark mid-life crisis movies.
Crazy Heart
Critics say I should see it. Jeff Bridges.
Sherlock Holmes
Not sure about this one.

  1. Of the ones you’ve seen, I have seen: #s 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 16, 18, and 20. I agree pretty much with your assessments, except I liked “The Hangover”. I think the movie had an endearing “Deliverance” quality to it.

Of the ones you’ve not seen, I have seen #10. I was very disappointed to see how they left over half the book out of the film, and how they changed part of the story to fit the time frame.

I did not see Gamer or Surrogates. The hub did on the regular guys-morning-out-Saturdays and said they were really not good. I was surprised by enjoying I Love You, Man. We watched A Perfect Getaway the other night. It wasn’t a complete waste of time and Mila Jovovich – oof. Timothy Olyphant I like in most of his stuff and he had a good role in this.

Public Enemies I liked but it could have been better.

Drag Me to Hell was like seeing 2 movies-one that was top notch Raimi circa Evil Dead and one that was trying to be a serious horror movie.

Fanboys was absolutely a riot. I forgot it came out in 2009.

I’ll have to try Yonkers Joe and My Bloody Valentine. I was afraid it was gonna be torture pron so I skipped it. If it is a return to classic slasher, I’m in.

Re: Gamer and Surrogates. Yeah, I kinda expect these to suck, but I’m gonna watch ‘em anyhow.

My Bloody Valentine is a splatter film and people certainly die in creative and horrible ways but it ain’t no Saw (btw, I thought the first one was pretty good).

  4. Guy S says:

saw Gamers, not too bad. Pirate Radio, was a cool little “blast from the past” about 60′s rock-n-roll dj’s over in England. Much better flick than I would have thought. Well worth a look. Just don’t expect Wolfman Jack or some such.

Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, worth the rental (or better yet, catching it on cable). Star Trek was a very nice surprise. There is soooo much they could have gotten wrong, and didn’t. That alone (for us old farts who were around when the original series first ran on tv) makes that one a definite buy the DVD.

Finally, one that was released in the first part of ’09 and wasn’t on your list (but should be) was “Gran Torino”. Eastwood did a great job on that one, well worth a watch.

  5. “Gran Torino” broke my heart, made me laugh, affirmed my belief in the good of humanity, and helped me to appreciate Vietnamese food again ;)

  6. WAMK says:

If you don’t use it already, may i suggest using Red Box for your movie rentals?

Less expensive than Blockbuster, faster than Netflix. $1 for a movie, can’t beat it.

    Gran Torino is a must-see.

  7. ArmedGeek says:

Yeah, Gran Torino was a great film … in 2008. Which is why it isn’t on this list. Really, do y’all really think I’d miss a movie like Gran Torino ?

Netflix has “Watch Instantly” which I use the hell out of.

  8. Guy S says:

Hmmmm according to IMDB the film was made in 08 but released in early 09 (January). Guess they could be wrong. That was the only reason I brought it up (had to originally check the date myself just to be sure).

  9. ArmedGeek says:

    Wikipedia:

The film opened to theaters in a limited release in North America on December 12, 2008, and later to a worldwide release on January 9, 2009.

So, I guess we’re both right. So .. I’ve seen Gran Torino and it was a great film.

Ever notice how you come across somebody once in a while that you shouldn’t have fucked with? That’s me.

  10. Woody says:

Just watched Grand Torino Sunday on the big screen. Great movie. If Clint Eastwood retired that would be a great bookend for him.

I’m also looking forward to Moon. Sam Rockwell was great in The Assasination Of Jesse James although he’ll always be Zaphod to me.

Public Enemies and Sherlock Holmes are bound to be great too.

Word is that Gran Torino would be his last on screen work. Which seems about right, he’s getting pretty old.

Sam Rockwell was great in The Assasination Of Jesse James although he’ll always be Zaphod to me.

He’ll always be ‘Wild Bill’ from The Green Mile to me.

  12. Woody says:

Haven’t seen “The Green Mile” since… well, since it came out I guess. Didn’t even recollect that Sam was in that one.

  13. Guy S says:

In ref to Gran Torino’s release date … if you cross the international date line at a high rate going counter-clockwise to the earth’s rotation … err wait, that would push the date even further back … *sigh* tosses in the towel, you win. heheheh

  14. Ok, saw Watchmen, and will be watching that one again! Truly enjoyed the character development, and yeah, I did cry, thanks to the fucking blue dick, literally.

Glad Rorschach got his way in the end. Fucking blue guy….
