ACORN Changes Name, Still Just Nuts

Posted by LC Aggie Sith on Tuesday, February 23, 2010 in AssHatery, Politics

Today came word that the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, known as ACORN, has decided to disband its national name in favor of “reorganizing under new local community groups to get away from the notoriety” of the acronym. While some say it’s a new and different organization, others are not so blind:

“This desolving of the national structure by ACORN is just a PR head fake. It’s a sham,” Matthew Vadum of the Capital Research Center in Washington, D.C. told Fox News. He says the new organizations will just continue ACORN’s work with the same agenda, in the same offices, just under different names. [snip]

“ACORN wants to keep the money flowing,” says Vadum. “In order to do that, they figure they need to change the name and change their image and they’re doing that by re-incorporating their state chapters under new names.”

ACORN has suffered deep losses after the James O’Keefe released videos of ACORN’s willingness to help a pimp with child prostitution and illegal immigration, among other things. Still, they manage to use him to raise money:

“Can you chip in $52 to help us keep the pressure on O’Keefe and his corporate paymasters?” the fundraising letter asked.

Though ACORN is actively campaigning, they do not disclose if the “new” organizations will get the money they raise. Interesting, no?

Hmmm….I’m sensing a naming contest here…. Who can come up with the best new name for ACORN??? :D

Hullabaloo, Canuck, Canuck!!*

Back some weeks ago, I posted a tidbit about Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Danny Williams electing to seek treatment for a heart ailment here in the US. Some questioned whether this showed a lack of faith in the Canadian system. Well, he has since spoken:

“This was my heart, my choice and my health,” Williams said late Monday from his condominium in Sarasota, Fla.

“I did not sign away my right to get the best possible health care for myself when I entered politics.”

Uh huh…. Williams had been diagnosed with a heart murmur, the cause being a heart valve that wasn’t closing properly, creating a leak. This was considered a “moderate” problem. The Canuck docs told him to come back in six months. So, he goes back eight months later, and the docs tell him the “moderate” problem is now “severe”. I don’t know about y’all, but if I were a Canadian citizen diagnosed with a “moderate” heart leak, I would make arrangements to be on the list to get it fixed ASAP. Now Williams has to have surgery. So, he chooses to come to the US for treatment because, “ I wanted to get in, get out fast, get back to work in a short period of time.” He goes on to do a mea culpa of sorts: (more…)
