Booze of the Week

Posted by ArmedGeek on Wednesday, March 3, 2010 in BOTW

For the spiced rum fan, this stuff is fucking spectacular. This is some booze you must be careful with, it is so smooth and tasty that you could forget its liquor and have to be carried to bed. Or if you’re like me and have no one to carry you to bed, would just wind up sleeping on the floor under the computer desk.

On the spiced rum front, I have to give the blue ribbon to the Captain Morgan Private Stock over the Sailor Jerry. However Sailor Jerry will remain in my ‘rotation’ due to its slightly cheaper price. For special occasions or just for something better that the usual I have to recommend the Captain Morgan Private Stock. INHOFE would approve.

  1. One of these days I’m gonna have to try this, as well as some of the other booze you’ve posted here. Mostly I drink beer and know next to nothing about any other “fire-water”, lol.

Rum is on my list of things to become acquainted with, as well as Scotch. Time to find out for myself the difference between single and double malt Scotch.

I’ve been strictly a beer drinker most of my life. I truly only started exploring booze when I started this website. It has been a fun and not terribly expensive hobby. When I started I didn’t know there were several different kinds of rum, I didn’t know the difference between whisky and whiskey and had no clue what scotch was.

Its a hobby I’d recommend to everyone except children and recovering alcoholics.

  3. I do have somewhat of a taste for Ouzo and Sambucca, and have tried several varieties of each. Strong licorice is not everyone’s cup of tea, but I do occasionally like it.

I also found firsthand how easy it is to be deceived by Ouzo. I was on a Greek island cruise, and at one of the ports, I went for a walk through the town, and just before I decided to head back to the ship, I stopped at this place to sample the local Ouzo before leaving. Well, I thought they would give me a shot, but instead, they gave me a glassful. I drank it, enjoyed its flavor immensely, and then started back to the ship. By the time I reached the dock (there were three cruise ships docked), I was in a really bad way. I couldn’t figure out which ship I was on, and tried to board each one of them and being appropriately turned back by their security. Finally, I got onto the right one, and somehow made it back to my room, where I fell down on the bed and slept for three or four hours.

Definitely learned my lesson with Ouzo.

  4. Sounds like what happened to hubby with sake, CF…only in his parents’ kitchen, and when he was a teen, thank goodness!

  5. Cruzan dark rum from the Virgin Islands is excellent. You will find that all the various rums from different countries (Puerto Rico, Barbados, Virgin Islands, etc.) have slight differences in taste.

Same thing with different premium bourbons and whiskies, particularly single malt scotches. There are four distinct Scotch producing regions in Scotland, and the differences between the varieties can be significant.

Remember, life is too short to drink cheap booze.
