Happy Father’s Day!

Posted by LC Aggie Sith on Sunday, June 20, 2010 in holiday, Open Thread

I know it has been a while since I posted, but with Hubby home for a week, and kids going to and coming from camp, along with a visit to my folks, I haven’t had much time to even comment at this blog, much less others. However, I cannot be remiss and let this wonderful day go unobserved. One thing you’ll notice is that I did not do a shopping guide for dads this holiday. Why? Because men are simple, and prone to be supremely happy with being left alone to peruse the sports channels for the entire day. A new tool set, a new gizmo for grilling, a fill-in-technical-device-here…. that would be enough for almost any dad. Men are truly wondrous creatures in their ability to secure happiness in the most simple ways, and I am forever grateful. So, without further ado:

And with this I officially open the Father’s Day Open Thread. Feel free to share your favorite experiences with your dad, or as a dad!

  1. I think one of my favorite memories is going for a drive up to Roma, TX, the week after we got here to the States. My dad took us up there, and we had a picnic of crackers, sausages, and bananas with milk, and watched the traffic on the highway from the picnic area. For a 9 year old kid who had never seen a highway, it was a pretty big deal!

That’s a sweet hitchhiker. She’s going into the July 4 file.

My father would have been 89 this year. Lost him five years ago.
After my mother died in ’82, the two of us took a road trip through the South visiting cousins, uncles and aunts from her side of the family. Played golf at wonderful courses along the way–Sea Island, Pinehurst, Harbor Town, Doral–and on the way back.
Also stopped in FLA. to visit his aunts, both in their late ’90s at the time. Great trip.

  4. I don’t really have a lot of strong Father’s Day memories, or stories.

I do have something similar, though, that made me feel really good. I started a new tradition with me and my son a few months ago, and that’s every week, we have father-son lunch, where for that one – two hours, all rules are lifted and it’s like two men hanging out for a couple hours. My idea was to start up a tradition that we keep even when he’s grown up. Well, last week, my wife was telling my son how we were going to spend the next weekend at her parent’s house, and he told her that we could not leave until he and I did our father son lunch for the week, and he was really adamant about it.

Simple thing, but it made me feel good.

  5. CF, a father-son lunch is a wonderful tradition! I should suggest the same for Hubby and son. He occasionally takes the girls out for a daddy-daughter date, but son needs time too.

CM, that sounds like a beautiful memory….and I do wonder, do you just get a sixth sense when a hooker is posted??

My dad left this plane of existence in (very) early 2002. There are still times when it doesn’t seem that long ago. Mom is still going strong, and his sons (and grandsons) have all been known to have a glass or two of scotch and cigar in his memory, from time to time.

Of course there have been many wonderful shared-experiences but some that stand out are: new-born Shelby sleeping on my chest the entire night her first night home and all the concerts we’ve attended (Cheap Trick, ZZ Top, The Who, etc…) together

Thanks for posting up Fathers Day, Aggie. Miss my Dad, and have similar memories to Butch about my son and my daughters.

Yowsah! The woman I live with watched that Dancing with the Stars show for a few seasons. I considered it equal time, because I own the sports TV. Well, once upon passing by this lady dancing along and dressed pretty much like that up there, I figured out that while the show is ridiculous, it has it’s merits.

Needless to say, I began to pay a little more attention.

This lady is pure gold in my book.
