Study: Heavy drinkers outlive non-drinkers
One of the most contentious issues in the vast literature about alcohol consumption has been the consistent finding that those who don’t drink actually tend to die sooner than those who do. The standard Alcoholics Anonymous explanation for this finding is that many of those who show up as abstainers in such research are actually former hard-core drunks who had already incurred health problems associated with drinking.
But a new paper in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research suggests that -- for reasons that aren’t entirely clear -- abstaining from alcohol does actually tend to increase one’s risk of dying even when you exclude former drinkers
I’ve often wondered myself if these studies were skewed by “recovering alcoholics”.
Moderate drinking, which is defined as one to three drinks per day, is associated with the lowest mortality rates in alcohol studies.
There’s lots and lots of good stuff over there so go read it.

So my moderate drinking cancels out the ill effects of my moderate smoking!!(as far as dying sooner by smoking) A win-win!!
Well, that is certainly the way I read it.
Yeah……You just cant trust those “recovering alkies” after all, they are quitters!
It’s because drunks can roll with the punches better, both literally and figuratively AND it’s a well known FACT that God looks after us.
So, in order to live longer, I have to increase my alcohol intake? Shit…I’ll end up passing out for the rest of my life….
Here’s to living longer… and enjoying it! Cheers!
Well, in reply to David above, “I’ll drink to that!!”
Just wait until Draco gets here. He’ll drink to anything. He’s the type to drink at the opening of an envelope
SWEET!!!! I knew there was a reason that imbibing the cocktail was a good thing!!
And Aggie, you know anytime I can get out of bed without assistance, it’s a good day for a celebration!! (Nat will agree with me!)
I told y’all!!!
I instantly have three thoughts, none of which will reveal if those studies are true:
1. Moderate drinking could lower stress which could lower high blood pressure, maybe?
2. Really drunk people have survived car accidents that a sober person might not because they don’t tense up right before the accident which helps prevent bone breakage. You hear it all the time “That should have killed them, but they only got scratches.” I was one of those drunk accident survivors years and years ago.
3. My oldest brother has been drunk most of my life, he now has liver failure and is expected to die soon.
Make what you will of that useless input.
Sure, and I think that’s the line we’re all looking for. How much booze can you take in before doing damage.
I think if I knew the answer to that, I’d take in just that much.
