A little geekiness

Posted by ArmedGeek on Wednesday, August 31, 2011 in Geekery

I’ve been using Linux since it was a toy for geeks. At first, I spent time (a lot of time) playing around with it and starting to get a handle on how it worked. This was really my first experience really digging into how an operating system did what it does. My interest at the time was mostly programming and the idea of a completely opensource OS thrilled me. I actually had a chance to really look at complete working source code for all kinds of different programs and applications. I’d never been exposed to “real” computers so the extent of my experience was DOS and Windows.

Then, around 12 years ago, I bought and installed my first fully working desktop Linux.

I suspect maybe one or two of you just had a flashback. Most of you have probably never seen that and maybe have never even heard of Red Hat but back then Red Hat was one of (if not the) biggest players in the Linux world. Really, they still are, just not so much at the consumer/hobbiest level.

Anyway, back then running Linux was like owning a car back when they were new. They were amazing machines but they required an awful lot of tweaking, fixing, babying to get them working and to keep them working.

I guess the actual point of this post is to say how surprised I am at how many of you are running Linux these days. Non-geeks, just regular folks, some of who don’t know the first thing about how these machines work are running Linux desktops or laptops. Of course these days there are probably a lot of you running Linux in one form or another without actually being aware of it. A great many of your gadgets have penguins* in them. Your DVRs and your streaming media boxes and your phones and your routers.

The website you’re reading now is running on a Linux box. Yours very likely is too.

The distros I run sometimes change from one day to the next. Right now, I’m on Fedora 15. Years ago Red Hat got out of the “free” business and got into the business business. What was once the free Red Hat is now Fedora. I still switch back occasionally to Ubuntu 11.04. On my servers, which run this website (and others) and my email and the H&B chat are running Debian 6.

Those of you running Linux, what distro are you running and how did you get started with it? What are your thoughts on it? To those not running Linux, what are you running? Is this the first you’re hearing of this “Linux” thing? Don’t be shy. We won’t make fun of you (much).

* that would be a reference to Tux, the Linux mascot. The concept of the Linux mascot being a penguin came from Linus Torvalds, the creator of Linux. Tux was created by Larry Ewing in 1996.

Tuesday

Yeah, i’m not as good at writing headlines as Aggie.

Let’s start with The Wire. If you’ve not seen it, watch it. Even if you’ve never seen it, or don’t intend to, this is still one of the coolest cop scenes ever made.

Turn out the lights.

Most important, the EPA’s regulatory cascade is a clear and present danger to the reliability and stability of the U.S. power system and grid. The spree affects plants that provide 40% of U.S. baseload capacity in the U.S., and almost half of U.S. net generation. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, or FERC, which is charged with ensuring the integrity of the power supply, reported this month in a letter to the Senate that 81 gigawatts of generating capacity is “very likely” or “likely” to be subtracted by 2018 amid coal plant retirements and downgrades.

That’s about 8% of all U.S. generating capacity. Merely losing 56 gigawatts—a midrange scenario in line with FERC and industry estimates—is the equivalent of wiping out all power generation for Florida and Mississippi.

Now, see? That is how you create jobs.

Warren Buffet owes back taxes.

Billionaire Warren Buffett says folks like him should have to pay more taxes — but it turns out his firm, Berkshire Hathaway, hasn’t paid what it’s already owed for years.

That’s right: As Americans for Limited Government President Bill Wilson notes, the company openly admits that it owes back taxes since as long ago as 2002.

Surprised? Yeah, I’m not either.

You know what time it is now, don’t you? Yeah, that’s right. Time for a Hooker…

US DOJ now enforcing foreign laws .. by raiding Gibson Guitars.

Here’s 1000 words … or at least the equivalent.

This would be so much fun..

One last thing: Poker Night. Since its short notice, I’m not going to bother organizing for tonight but starting next week Poker Night will be Tuesday night at 8pm Texas Time.

Also, don’t forget to sign up and get your picks in for Hookers & Booze Football

The Truth Hurts

Posted by LC Aggie Sith on Monday, August 29, 2011 in AssHatery, Idiotarians, Politics, Total Bullshit

In this particular instance, the infliction of pain goes a long way in putting a smile on my face:

Powell says Cheney taking ‘cheap shots’ in book

Let’s take a moment here to laugh, shall we??

The Affirmative Action General goes on to bitch on Face the Nation that this book is nothing more than a rehashing of what happened about eight years ago, and that had Cheney’s staff and others in the White House had been forthcoming about the Valerie Plame issue, Libby would not have been indicted and convicted. Not sure what that has to do with Cheney’s criticisms of Powell’s rather weak policy towards Iraq, but rehashing is good for the goose, and apparently the gander, too.

Go read the article. The whole thing is a whiny bitchfest about how he served President Bush and how Cheney basically is acting like he is writing a supermarket tabloid unbecoming a former vice-president. Not that you need me to point it out, but who do you really think is acting like a creature from a tabloid here??

I rest my case.

Palin Prediction

Posted by ArmedGeek on Friday, August 26, 2011 in 2012, Politics

She’s not gonna run.

Way back earlier this year I figured either Perry or Palin would run but not both. I think its generally accepted that Perry and Palin get along well and probably wouldn’t intentionally torpedo the other. My prediction at the time was that one would run and the other would endorse. Well, with Perry in the race, I don’t think Palin will jump in but I do think she’s going to endorse Perry.

Now … what if she does jump in?

Well, I think that will be a disaster. I think Palin would siphon enough votes from Perry and Bachmann (and even Paul) to ensure Romney as the nominee. However, I feel confident that Palin puts the good of the country ahead of her own aspirations and I’m sure she knows what getting into the race would result in. Which is a big reason I think she’ll stay out of it.

So, there’s my prediction on Palin. What do y’all think ?

Poker Night

Posted by ArmedGeek on Thursday, August 25, 2011 in Poker Night

Its Thursday and that means its Poker Night at Hookers & Booze.

Due to schedule changes in my real life, I’m not really available on Thursday nights anymore. So, I’m asking for input on changing the day we do Poker Night. Poker Night used to be at 7pm but this proved too early for several players so we moved it to 8pm. Well, 8pm doesn’t work for me on Thursdays.

So here’s the options: Move Poker Night to Mondays or Tuesdays at 8pm. Or leave it on Thursdays but move it to 7pm. Or leave it as is and just play without me.

Let me know what you’d prefer.

Prickly Sweet

Posted by LC Aggie Sith on Thursday, August 25, 2011 in Food Porn, Randomness

In anticipation of Draco’s visit, I stopped at the grocery store for staples that the kids seemed to have inhaled this week. Now that they are up early, they actually eat breakfast. And as I was cruising down the bread aisle, I saw this:

That’s right, my friends! Honey flavored blue agave nectar. Nectar of the gods!!! Because we all know what else comes from blue agave, right?

I can’t wait to try some. The sweetener, I mean. I already know what tequila tastes like.
