The Dichotomy of Oil Prices

Posted by LC Aggie Sith on Monday, February 27, 2012 in Economics, Government, Guest Post, Politics

(Guest post by Anonymous)

In today’s political climate, liberals are known for being for social issues whereas conservatives are known for business issues. But is that really true? Let’s consider the strange case of the Permian Basin. For those not familiar with it, the Permian Basin is a sedimentary basin largely contained in the western part of the U.S. state of Texas and the southeastern part of the state of New Mexico. It reaches from just south of Lubbock, Texas, to just south of Midland and Odessa, extending westward into the southeastern part of the adjacent state of New Mexico. It is so named because it has one of the world’s thickest deposits of rocks from the Permian geologic period. It is also a large oil and natural gas producing area.

For the most part, Republicans have far outweighed Democrats in the area. In some areas, Democrats are like an endangered species. Almost everything that happens in the Permian Basin is tied to oil and natural gas production. Therefore, the economic booms and busts in the area are directly tied to the price of oil. When the price of oil goes up, the area experiences a boom and conversely when the price of oil is low, it experiences a bust.

The economic booms when they happen bring great wealth to the area. So much it generally leads to people pissing away the money on frivolous things. Then when the inevitable bust happens, people go bankrupt, and lose their business, their jobs and their houses. The rate of unemployment shoots sky-high and most communities experience a loss of population.

Even though communities in the Basin have tried mightily to diversify economic factors, the single most likely indicator continues to be oil. Likewise, in the general economy of the nation as a whole, oil is a major factor is economic well-being. When the price of oil is low, the overall economy does well. When it is high, we usually experience a recession. This is the exact opposite of what happens in the Permian Basin.

Breakfast of Champions

Posted by LC Aggie Sith on Friday, February 24, 2012 in Food Porn, Open Thread

I ♥ a good breakfast. It is my favorite meal of the day. I tend to adapt to the customs of the area, state, or country in which I find myself. When we used to go upstate to visit my grandmother-in-law, it was eggs and grits.

I’m already salivating, people!! All it needs is a bit of butter, and MORE BACONZ!!

When I visited Fwance, it was a bit different. They enjoy breakfast, but it’s of a more relaxed variety. It’s almost like they are just too tired to try making a good, hearty breakfast.

Pretty, isn’t it? I asked the waiter if there was any breakfast meat (SHUT IT!!), and he gave me a blank stare. They have no concept of the BACONZ!!

Germany, however, had a better concept of breakfast. After all, they are the Abe Froman* of the world.

I tell you, that is one thing I miss about Germany. Probably the only thing, along with the beer.

So, what is the quintessential breakfast for y’all? What’s the worst breakfast you’ve ever had? I know there are a few of you who have travelled extensively, so share some of the culinary masterpieces and horrors of the most important meal of the day that you have experienced.

And yes, beer counts ;)

*You know, “The Sausage King of Chicago”.

And Y’all Thought We Had Political Drama

Posted by LC Aggie Sith on Thursday, February 23, 2012 in Government, Idiotarians, Politics

No, we are pretty tame around this country. At least compared to Australia:

In the most significant show of support so far for the former prime minister, Resources and Energy Minister Martin Ferguson said Mr Rudd was best placed to take on Tony Abbott at the next election.

“I’m not sure whether or not there will be leadership ballot on Monday. But can I say, should Kevin Rudd choose to run, I will vote for Kevin Rudd as prime minister of Australia,” the cabinet minister said.

Now, as y’all recall, Kevin Rudd succeeded John Howard, and then in turn was succeeded by the abomination known as Julia Gillard. In her case, the term “succeeded” is a pseudonym for “stabbed in the back”, since she had pledged her support of Rudd, only to turn around a week later and run against the bastard.

I’m not a fan or Rudd, but politics is like a funeral: you have to wait a certain amount of time before you can be less respectful of the dead. Gillard fucked up, and started the divisions that are coming to fruition in the Labor Party. And now she is a bit scared:

Earlier, Ms Gillard announced a caucus leadership spill for 10am on Monday. She said she “expects” to win but ruled out a future challenge if she lost, and urged Mr Rudd to make a similar commitment.

Yeah, I’m enjoying the fracking going on over there. The Aussies make us look like pikers. As my friend Tiberius puts it:

I would love to see Gillard win by a hair -- her government continue to sink, Rudd puts a good showing and continues to snipe from the back bench -- and Labor wiped out in the next election.

And that my friends, is what our conservatives should be doing. It’s time we fostered divisions over on the left side of the aisle, and let them destroy each other, for once.

Michigan: The trees are the right height

Posted by ArmedGeek on Tuesday, February 21, 2012 in 2012, Politics

No, I’m not kidding.

What the fuck is wrong with this dude?

“I was born and raised here. I love being in Michigan”, Mr. Romney said. “Everything seems right here. You know, I come back to Michigan; the trees are the right height. The grass is the right color for this time of year, kind of a brownish-greenish sort of thing. It just feels right.”

“I like seeing the lakes. I love the lakes. There’s something very special here. The Great Lakes, but also all the little inland lakes that dot the parts of Michigan.”

“You know, we’ve been to Massachusetts. I love the ocean, too, I do love the ocean, but there’s something special about lakes, where you don’t get salt on you after you’ve been swimming, where there’s no seaweed, where you don’t have to worry about things eating you in the water.”

“I grew up totally in love with cars,” he said. “It used to be in the 50s and 60s, if you showed me one square foot of almost any part of a car I could tell you what brand it was, the model and so forth. Now with all the Japanese cars I’m not so good at it, but I still know the American cars pretty well.”

Mr. Romney told the crowd that he drives a Mustang.

“I love American cars, and long may they rule the world,” he said. “Let me tell you, I want them to do well.”

I understand that all politicians pander to some degree or another, but this is just insane.
