By now y’all have heard about the murder of Kate Steinle at Pier 14 in San Francisco, allegedly at the hands of Juan Francisco Lopez Sanchez, an illegal immigrant who had committed seven felonies in the US and had been deported five times previously. For years many Americans have been complaining about the federal government’s lack of enforcement of our current immigration laws, to no avail. But now with the high profile murder happening in a high profile city famous for its sanctuary status, certain high profile politicians are voicing their displeasure and complete opposition to sanctuary cities and the harboring of dangerous illegal immigrants.
Hillary Clinton joins a chorus of Democrats, which includes California senators Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer, in condemning San Francisco’s ‘sanctuary’ policy in the aftermath of a deadly shooting allegedly involving Francisco Sanchez, an illegal immigrant released by the city.
Only they were for it, before they were against it.
When Mrs. Clinton first ran for the Democratic nomination in 2007, she declared during a televised debate that she supports sanctuary status so that police officers are not burdened with having to do ICE’s job and therefore they would be free to protect the city’s citizens. No, really.
“If local law enforcement begins to act like immigration officers, what that means is that you will have people not reporting crimes,” she said. “You will have people hiding from the police. And I think that is a real direct threat to the personal safety and security of all the citizens. So this is a result of the failure of the federal government and that’s where it needs to be fixed.”
Senator Boxer (D-CA) is on record for not just supporting the DREAM Act, but also for voting to continue providing federal funds for “sanctuary cities”. Senator Feinstein (D-CA) voted for the funds as well as a separate fund for INS (ICE) to relieve the immigrant visa backlog, and voting against doing away with the temporary guestworker program.
So why the change of heart now? Could be that these politicians decided to finally listen to the will of the people. Could also be that they are now realizing that giving sanctuary to the poor and unwashed non-citizens was not all wine and roses. But Occam tells me differently. The presidential election is coming up next year, and it is time to run to the center and pretend that they work for something noble like their constituents.
This is not the first time an illegal immigrant has committed a felony in a sanctuary city, just the latest. But unfortunately for these politicians, no amount of condemnation will bring back that young woman, nor will it soothe those who have been beaten, carjacked, raped, and/or killed at the hands of illegals. “Sanctuary” has become a hell.
