Girlie Drink of the Week

Posted by LC Aggie Sith on Thursday, February 9, 2012 in BOOZE!!, History

You know, it’s hard to think about BOOZE*. Sure, anyone can just grab a beer, or pour anything on the rocks and be done with it. But I am obstinate. Girlie Drinks have to have a background, a history of some kind. Even the Aquatini cocktail, which was my first Girlie Drink post, has some background (it was named after a restaurant in Bangkok). In truth, all cocktails have a history, but who wants to write about some guy at a frat party that was so sloshed he poured the leftovers in five bottles and made a cocktail out of it? There’s no romance in a story like that! I demand romance from BOOZE*.

That sounds odd, and yet, true.

Anyway, today’s offering has a literary history dating back to the 1920′s. The Algonquin Hotel, made famous by the group of writers who congregated at the Round Table, or the Vicious Circle, also made a signature drink for the struggling writers who would grace the lobby and bar. The hotel is now listed as an Historic Place, and still adheres to the traditions held dear by its most famous owner, Frank Case: struggling writers can stay in the prestigious hotel for a fraction of the regular cost of the room, enjoy a free meal, and yes, there is still a cat gracing the lobby. So much history, good and bad, transpired at the Algonquin.

The Algonquin

  • 1 ½ oz. Blended Whiskey
  • 1 oz. Dry Vermouth
  • 1 oz. Pineapple Juice

Combine and shake all ingredients with ice, strain contents into a cocktail glass, and serve. Garnish with cherries.

As Algonquin Round Table member Dorothy Parker famously said, what fresh Hell is this? Well, I’ll tell you, it’s a GOOD fresh one ;)

*Yep, still doin’ it.

Girlie Drink of the Week

Posted by LC Aggie Sith on Thursday, January 12, 2012 in BOOZE!!, BOTW

I’m a bit strung out from organizing yesterday, so I needed something quick and light to help me doze off into Dreamland. Now, in college we were not allowed to keep BOOZE* in our dorms, but you damn well know kids will hide BOOZE* anyway they can. I never did, but I remember how one friend hid her Amaretto Sour in the juice container. And that got me to the GDOTW!!

AMARETTO SOUR

  • 1 ½ ounces Amaretto
  • 1 to 2 ounces Sweet and Sour Mix

Pour ingredients in a shaker filled with ice, shake well, and strain into a ice-filled glass. Garnish with cherries and/or orange slices. Personally, the orange makes it a bit too acidic for my taste, so I just place cherries in mine. Believe me, you never feel it until it hits you :)

Girlie Drink of the Week

Posted by LC Aggie Sith on Sunday, January 1, 2012 in BOOZE!!, BOTW

My apologies to y’all. I didn’t make a GDOTW for you this past week, because….well, it’s New Year’s, and I’m pretty y’all have that covered. But BOOZE* is BOOZE*, and thanks to a friend of mine, and a spare bottle in the fridge, I shall be making these for New Year’s Day at my sister’s:

POINSETTIA

  • 1 Tbsp. Grand Marnier, or Triple Sec
  • 1 Part Cranberry Juice
  • Champagne
  • Juice of ½ lime (optional)

There are several variations of the cocktail. One version has you mix the triple sec and cranberry juice, then adding the champagne and floating the lime juice on top. Another has you pour the cranberry juice in the glass, add the champagne, and float the Grand Marnier, skipping the lime juice. Whichever you prefer, I hope it helps you to enjoy the holiday!

Hat tip to Vmaximus :)

Well, I have been fighting a cold for what seems to be forever, but in reality has been only since Monday. In hindsight, I should have just let it take its course, rather than keep postponing the inevitable, only to have it during Christmas Day.

But this is what the GDOTW is for!

The Hot Toddy

  • 1 Tbsp Honey
  • 3/4 cup Hot Tea
  • 2 Shots Brandy
  • 1 slice Lemon
  • 3-4 Cloves (optional)
  • Cinnamon sticks (optional)

Brew your tea (or just do hot water, if you prefer), add honey and brandy, stirring well. Pierce lemon slice with cloves, and float on top, adding cinnamon stick. This may not cure your cold, but it will make you not care you have one ;)

Girlie Drink of the Week

Posted by LC Aggie Sith on Thursday, December 15, 2011 in BOOZE!!, Social

It’s Thursday, and that means I get to post about BOOZE*. Today’s feature takes me back to my college years. This was popular with the girls in my dorm because it didn’t require a lot of ingredients or garnishing, not to mention one could hide a premixed amount in a bottle of OJ, thereby passing inspection by the RAs.

Not that I ever did that, mind you.

The Fuzzy Navel

  • 1 part Peach Schnapps
  • 1 part Orange Juice
  • 1 part Lemonade

In a highball, mix all ingredients first, then add ice. Garnish with slices of peach and orange.

For those of you who prefer a manly drink, omit the schnapps, OJ, and lemonade, and just add vodka. ;)

Yes, I know we had the BOOZE* of the Week earlier, but this is Hookers and BOOZE*, which means that technically, half of the posts should be about BOOZE*, right? And I know where that leads in y’all’s sense of logic, so I’ll stop there.

Yesterday while being a hostage to the Cartoon Network switching channels I saw an add for one of those weird reality shows where brides are involved. I think it was called Say Yes to the Bridezilla Acing a Cake Wondering If It’s Her Wedding Anyway. I didn’t watch it, except I did see what was being served at the “bridal luncheon”, probably to deal with five dozen women having histrionics at one sitting:

Champagne Cocktail

  • 3 oz Champagne
  • 1/3 oz Cognac
  • Angostura Bitters
  • Sugar Cube

Soak one sugar cube in a champagne flute with angostura bitters. Add champagne and cognac. Squeeze in a twist of lemon and discard. Garnish with half a slice of orange, or as I prefer, raspberries. I love the combination of lemon and raspberries, and the splash of red looks gorgeous against the pale gold of the champagne.

Remember: don’t drink it for looks. Drink it because it will make dealing with idiots at parties a lot easier.

*Yep, still G0000000gling for hits here.

Here’s a Hooker .. and some Booze

Yes, I had to try out what is probably the most popular blended scotch out there. I have to say, it isn’t bad. The taste, the smell and the color are all pleasant. There’s really only one bad thing I can say about the stuff. It has a flavor more like Irish whiskey than Scotch. Now, for me, this is not a bad thing as I really like Irish whiskey but for a scotch drinker, this ain’t gonna cut it. It does have a more scotch-y flavor than you’d find in an Irish whiskey but it is very easy to drink. On this one, I have to say “for the price” it is pretty good stuff.

Girlie Drink of the Week

Today’s pick hails from that haven of old money, Neiman Marcus. Or like Hubby likes to call it, Needless Mark-ups. I like to walk around that store. It makes me appreciate having common sense, because there is no way in hell I would ever pay $500 for a pair of torn faded jeans. Or $2,000 for a necklace made of brass and stainless steel. I kid you not.

However, if there is one thing the restaurant at Neiman Marcus can be counted on, it’s to provide a frou-frou drink made from designer liqueurs, and charge you an arm, a leg, and a unit of plasma for it. At least they now share their recipes free of charge. I still remember the poor man who was charged $250 for the Neiman Marcus Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe. Thanks to the interwebtubenets, he got his revenge.

White Raspberry Cosmo

  • 3 oz. Chambord™ Vodka
  • 2 oz. Cointreau™
  • 1 oz. Lime Juice
  • 2 oz. White Cranberry Juice

Shake over ice, strain into two martini glasses and garnish with a raspberries. The recipe makes two servings, or one serving if you use a RedNek™ Wine Glass, or if you drink your martini from a measuring cup.

Like y’all have never done that!! ;)

Girlie Drink of the Week

Posted by LC Aggie Sith on Thursday, November 3, 2011 in BOOZE!!, BOTW

Awesome! Time for BOOZE* at H&B!! After the week I’ve had (so far, because it ain’t over), I need a few of anything.

The featured drink for this week is more of a summer drink. It is also a very famous drink. There are songs, a movie, a band (or five) named after it. The ease of making it is rivalled only by the prettiness of the color, even though it falls in the orange side of the spectrum.

Tequila Sunrise

  • 2 oz. Tequila
  • Orange Juice
  • 2 dashes of Grenadine

Pour tequila in glass of your choice with ice, and top with orange juice. Stir. Add grenadine by tilting glass and pouring grenadine down side by flipping the bottle vertically very quickly (it helps if the grenadine bottle has a little pourer to prevent over-dosing on this). The grenadine should go straight to the bottom and then rise up slowly through the drink. Garnish with cherry and an orange slice.

I have done this as a martini glass drink, too. I shake the OJ and tequila over ice, and pour into a sugar-rimmed martini glass. The grenadine looks very pretty on the bottom of the glass. My sister omits the sugar and grenadine altogether and calls it a Mexican Screwdriver. I call it heresy. My brother-in-law omits the OJ and calls it Nytol.

I can’t argue with that :)

Girlie Drink of the Week

Posted by LC Aggie Sith on Thursday, October 27, 2011 in BOOZE!!, BOTW

In a few days, we shall be celebrating Halloween. That means some of us will be dressing up and going to parties or handing out candy, or both. What it really means is, we are going to get mighty tired of kids ringing the doorbell and saying “TRICK OR TREAT!!!” while looking down their nose at your pathetic taste in candy. I get to do that from the comfort of a block party, where all the neighbors bring their candy and we serve the kids in an assembly line. What the hell does this have to do with BOOZE*??

It means I get to start drinking early. And what better drink, than one that looks so innocent??

The Lemon Drop

  • 1 oz Vodka
  • 1 oz Lemon Juice
  • 1 Sugar Cube

Add sugar to the rim of an old-fashioned glass, and drop a cube or packet of sugar into the bottom of the glass. Pour vodka and lemon juice into a stainless steel shaker over ice, and shake until completely cold. Pour into the prepared old-fashioned glass, and serve. Personally, I like using Sugar in the Raw™ to rim the glass, since it’s prettier than yellow colored sugar. Also, I add two cubes instead of one. Why? Well, for one thing, I like sweeter BOOZE*, and for another, I can get sloshed a lot quicker.

*Yes, still angling for the G00000glers.
