Girlie Drink of the Week

Posted by LC Aggie Sith on Thursday, October 6, 2011 in BOOZE!!, BOTW

I swear, I had this in mind before yesterday’s news.

For me, it’s all about the glass. The BOOZE* has to be in a pretty glass. That’s probably why I gravitate towards martini-like drinks so much. And probably why I own ten Lolita™ martini glasses. But presentation counts, right? I was going to do Tequila Sunrise, but I hate drinking BOOZE* from a highball. It makes me feel like I’m hiding the fact that I’m drinking BOOZE*.

So I give you instead, the Washington Apple Shot:

WASHINGTON APPLE SHOT:

  • 1 oz. Whiskey (BOOZE*)
  • 1 oz. Sour Apple Schnapps(BOOZE*)
  • 1 oz. Cranberry Juice
  • Splash of Sprite or Tonic Water

Pour whiskey, schnapps, and cranberry juice into a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake well, and strain into a cinnamon sugar-rimmed martini glass. Add Sprite or tonic water if desired. Garnish with an apple wedge.

*Yes, still doing the shameless G00000000gle whoring.

Girlie Drink of the Week

Posted by LC Aggie Sith on Thursday, September 29, 2011 in BOTW

It has been a while since I wrote about BOOZE*. Between Hubby’s wonderful visit, and the kids’ schooling, I have had little opportunity to write a post about BOOZE* that appeals to the female readers of this blog. That’s not to say I didn’t enjoy BOOZE* while Hubby was here, or when the Nomstress was visiting, because if I recall, we did manage to consume quite a bit of BOOZE* during their stay.

The recycling bin was pretty full ;)

Anyway, our friend Bako was kind enough to inspire me. Actually, I asked him if he could recommend a girlie drink, and then he said he would never do such a thing, but being the kind and thoughtful soul he is, he took pity and suggested a very simple and refreshing cocktail.

TEQUILA GIMLET:

  • 1 oz. Lemon Juice
  • ¼ oz Rose’s Lime Juice
  • 2 oz Silver Tequila

Shake well with ice in a shaker and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with sugar and lime slices, if desired.

I did it as Bako suggested, using all fresh lime juice. And at that ratio, I’m sure it would knock me out, so I did 2 oz. of lime juice to 1 oz of tequila.

It knocked me out anyway.

*My shameless attempt to get on the front page of G00000gle for the term BOOZE.

UPDATE!!!!

I have to underline here that our friend Bako only suggested the cocktail as he makes it, which is equal parts of lime juice and tequila.

He is in no way associated with ever suggesting the use of Rose’s lime juice. Ever. In anything. Eleventy!!!

Booze of the Week

Macallan 12 Year Old single malt speyside scotch aged in Spanish sherry oak.

This is the scotch I’ve been looking for. Regulars around here know that so far I’ve been largely unimpressed with the scotch whiskys that I’ve tried. This stuff gave me a clue what all the fuss is about.

First of all the look. The Macallan is dark with a tinge of red. Personally, if I made booze that looked this good, there’s no way I’d put it in a box on the shelf.

I’m not sure I really have enough experience with scotch to really pick apart the flavor but it is bold. Where the Glen Moray and the Glennmorangie reminded me of Canadian Whiskey in their “subtlety” and downright blandness, the Macallan is probably one of the only things I’ve found with a stronger flavor than bourbon.

Despite the price, at around $40 for a fifth, I will very likely be keeping a bottle of this stuff around. I highly recommend The Macallan 12.

There’s honestly not much I can say about this one. I picked this one up on sale and I suppose you get what you pay for. Glen Moray is another in the ever-growing category of “not bad, but nothing special“. I’d probably rate it below the Glenmorangie. It lacks any real flavor or character which sort of shows in its very light color. My recommendation is that if its the only thing available, drink it. Otherwise, take a pass.

Booze of the Year

Only the coolest thing since chocolate-covered cherries!

They’ve sold millions of albums as one of the greatest all-time bands and now AC/DC hope to do a similar trade in wine.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees have teamed up with Australian winery Warburn Estate for a national release of AC/DC The Wine.

(Insert “ZOMG!!!” here)

There will be four wines issued: Back in Black Shiraz, Highway to Hell Cabernet Sauvignon, Hells Bells Sauvignon Blanc, and my favorite, You Shook Me All Night Long Moscato. The first issue will be solely in Australia come August 18th. I can only hope they launch them here in the US.

The only thing that would make this even more perfect would be to have a Whole Lotta Rosie Rosé.

Booze of the Week

Glenmorangie 10 year old Original single malt scotch whisky is the Booze of the Week. This one is difficult for me to review as it is my first ever single malt scotch. While I cannot compare it to other single malts, I can analyze it from a drinker’s perspective.

It is incredibly smooth both in taste and in aroma but there is very little in the way of identifiable components. It is a fairly pale liquor in both appearance and taste. I am really unable to identify any particular flavors in it. This may be due to my lack of experience with scotch or it may be that bourbons tend towards a bolder taste (although that is not my understanding). Glenmorangie tends near the top of everyone’s list for a ‘starter scotch’ and its mild flavor is a likely reason.

It is good. What flavor it has is pleasant if undefinable by me. It is extremely easy to drink either straight or with a little ice or with a little soda water. I don’t feel I can honestly review this scotch yet due to my lack of experience. I can’t recommend that you pick it up or that you should avoid it. What I can say is that I do not feel that I paid too much for it. It is a nice liquor and its easy to drink. If someone offers you some or you see some at your local drinking establishment, by all means give it a try. I feel that it was a good purchase and a gentle introduction to scotch whisky.

Booze of the Week

Originally I’d gone hunting for Templeton Rye but was unable to locate it at my friendly neighborhood liquor store. Luckily, Jam2 had emailed me a couple of suggested bourbons; Eagle Rare being one of them.

Eagle Rare has a pretty strong smell that is certainly bourbon-y but a bit harsher than some of the better bourbons I’ve reviewed here and that certainly lowered my expectations. On first taste though I was pleasantly surprised. Eagle Rare has a pretty good bourbon flavor and is extremely smooth and easy to drink. There isn’t however really anything about it that sets it apart from other bourbons. It has a good flavor, just … bourbon. I certainly don’t mean to beat up on Eagle Rare but at the same price as Makers Mark, there’s just no reason for me to buy another bottle of this bourbon.

Again, this is not to say that there is anything at all wrong with Eagle Rare. It is certainly a top self bourbon but maybe I’ve spoiled myself with the likes of Makers Mark, Makers #46 and Bulleit. I would certainly not turn it down if offered and I do urge the bourbon drinkers here to give it a try. Some people find the flavor of Makers Mark to be too “busy” .. a bit too much going on there and for those folks, this milder bourbon might be right down their alley. And it is very easy to drink.

I do thank Jam2 for recommending it as it allowed me to experience yet another better than average bourbon.

Moving right along down the dark rum list is Kraken Black Spiced Rum. This is probably the rummiest smelling of my recent dark rums. Not a lot I can really say about the smell other than that. It smells like rum.

Like several of the other rums, the first few glasses sips didn’t really do much for me, but after adjusting to the taste the flavors really come out. Unlike the regular spiced rums, these dark spiced rums are much more subtle in their spice flavors while at the same time having a much bolder overall taste. I’m not entirely certain that description makes sense, but I’ve retyped it several times and that’s the best way I can describe it. The dark spiced rums almost overwhelm your mouth at first and then the finish is so subtle that you almost miss it. Kraken has more of a woody beginning than the Tattoo does, but less than the Black Seal. It is also less sweet than the Tattoo and is a little more subtle in its finish.

My verdict is that I like the Kraken and it may very well find itself a regular spot on my liquor shelf. I recommend you at least give it a try.

Guest Booze Review

Posted by ArmedGeek on Tuesday, May 17, 2011 in Booze Links, BOTW

You read that right. We’ve got our first every guest liquor review by none other than Purple Raider.

(Guest post by Purple Raider)

Templeton Rye Whiskey is a smooth, mellow, complex, easy-drinking whiskey. Not as pungent as bourbon, not peaty like a Scotch or Irish whiskey, it is distilled in Indiana, and bottled in Templeton, Iowa.

According to the label, Templeton Rye was created during prohibition. It became Al Capone’s whiskey of choice, and was nicknamed “The good stuff’. Legend has it that several bottles were smuggled into Alcatraz.

I am not a fan of bourbon (too sweet for my tastes), and when I uncorked the bottle I caught a whiff of bourbon in the aroma. Undaunted, I poured two fingers in my glass, over ice to start. Then I tasted this stuff.

This is simply the most complex liquor I have ever had. A semi-sweet start, undertones of vanilla, nuts, and grain (duh), but you had different flavors at every sip. The aftertaste was very pleasing to the palate, with the continuation of the nutty flavor of the rye. A very clean, satisifying finish.

I also tried this sans ice, and the flavors really jumped out at me, and yet that same clean finish.

I would not use this whiskey in a mixer, it deserves to be drunk straight, or if you must, over ice. And at a price of around $40, I don’t think you would really want to mix this whiskey.

There is really nothing like this whiskey. For a special occasion, go for it. And please go to their website: http://www.templetonrye.com/home/
