Aggie’s Challenge: Ten Things

Aggie posted a challenge over at her other home. A simple challenge; Ten favorites.

Here’s mine:
#1– Favorite candy: Necco Wafers. If you don’t know what these are, you are a bad, bad person. I’ve loved these since I was a little kid.

#2– Favorite movie: Fuck. So many. If I picked one based on the number of times I’ve seen it, it’d probably be a tie between The Long Weekend and Double Indemnity.

#3– Favorite drink: Manhattan. Although I’m generally too lazy for that so bourbon with a bit of soda.

#4– Favorite dessert: I’m hugely boring here. Ice cream. Vanilla or chocolate. Nothing fancy.

#5– Favorite city: I’m not terribly exciting here either. Nacogdoches, Texas. Its a small town but has just about anything you’d need. And with SFA University there, its always stocked with good looking women.

#6– Favorite pasttime: Geekery.

#7– Favorite clothing: Flannel pajama pants and a tshirt.

#8– Favorite animal: Cows. After all, they are my favorite food.

#9– Favorite flower: I got nothing. Even if I had a favorite flower I wouldn’t know what it was called.

#10 Favorite music: This one’s a moving target for me. It depends on my mood. Lately, blues.

You’re In The Picture

Now, I’m sure some of you have heard of You’re In The Picture. It was a failed gameshow hosted by Jackie Gleason.

A four-member celebrity panel would stick their heads into a life-sized illustration of a famous scene or song lyric and then take turns asking yes/no questions to Gleason to try to figure out what scene they were a part of. If they were able to figure out the scene, 100 CARE Packages were donated in their name; if they were stumped, the packages were donated in Gleason’s name. Live music was provided by a Dixieland band (supposedly arranged by Gleason himself) under the direction of Norman Leyden.

It was bad. It was really bad. It was so bad that the night the second episode was supposed to air people saw this instead …

Growing up we had two options to keep ourselves occupied: play outside, or if it was raining, stay out of the way inside. “Playing” inside was a different matter since Mom did not want anything broken, or spilled, or maimed. So that option had sub-choices: read (and that was like Kryptonite to two of my sisters, so that was usually out), play with dolls (which were usually maimed, or broken due to their uses as weapons), or play a board game. Watching TV was simply not an option for two reasons: there was only one TV, and there was only one Mom. And after Dad came home, there was only one Dad. So, we opted usually for the board game option. And out of the three games in the house, we had our favorite: MONOPOLY!!!

Why? Because giving a kid two $500 bills was always awesome!! My mom would set up the board and deal, and then leave us alone to play on the table while she went about her business. That game was replaced several times in the course of growing up. And even though we added to our closet of board games, that one was still our favorite.

Nowadays, electronic games are more popular, so much so that Monopoly has an electronic board version, as well as several videogame versions. My kids prefer to play videogames or PC games, but every once in a while, they break out the board games, probably to give their mother a smackdown of epic proportions. I’m proud to say that they do, except when it comes to Scrabble. And Twister

I miss the 80′s. There, I said it. Back then, it was actually fun to watch TV. Sure, there was social commentary. You can’t get away from that, ever. But there was an art to squeezing it in a 30-minute-with-commercial-interruptions Sit Com. The other day, I was watching a Nickelodeon TV show for kids called Victorious, and during the show the main character made a deal to give a young boy a kiss in return for an item she needed in order to win the contest. At the end of the show, she reneged on her promise, tricking the kid and locking him out of her house. My Little One is watching this, and I ask her what she thought of it. She said that Tori broke her promise, and that was just not cool. I find it ironic that the producers of this show were themselves child stars from the TV show, Head of the Class, a show I particularly enjoyed because it was about an unconventional teacher and his students. Seriously, did they learn NOTHING???

But enough about that. I want to travel in my Way Back Machine™ and remember how I laughed at milk and Pepsi, how Johnny Fever wore his shades, how funny is was to watch Fonzie tell someone to “sit on it.” At least, until he jumped the shark…

So, what were your favorite sit-coms growing up in the 80′s??

Texas Holdem Server Instructions

Would you like to play a game?

First, download one of these clients and install:
Windows: PokerTH-0.8.3-windows-installer.exe
OSX: PokerTH-0.8.3.dmg
Linux: PokerTH-0.8.3-linux-installer.bin
Note about Linux: You might be able to install PokerTH from your software repository, but it does have to be version 0.8.3.

Note: If you downloaded this Friday, you need to do it again. I’ve updated the links to the newer version of PokerTH.

After you have the client installed, fire it up and select Settings -> Configure PokerTH from the menu.

Main Configuration Window

You’ll want to select Internet Game from the left side and you should see this:

The yellow boxes indicate where changes need to be made.

Check Manual Server Configuration
Set Server Address to armedgeek.net
Set Server Port to 7234 (probably already set to that)
Check Lobby Chat (IRC)
Set Server Address to irc.hookersandbooze.com
Set Server Port to 6667 (Probably already set to this)
Set Channel to #pokerth-lobby-debian (Probably already set to this)

Next, select Nicks/Avatars:

Nicks/Avatars Settings

The spot in the yellow box is yours. Set your name and your avatar here. This is how others in the game will see you.

Once your configuration is done you can click OK at the bottom of the configuration panel and you should return to the main window.

Just click Internet Game and you should connect to the server.

I’m curious if any of y’all would be interested in a little online Texas Holdem. I’ve set up a private server and the client runs on Windows, OSX and Linux. It would be a dedicated server for just us .. by ‘us’ I mean our little corner of the blogosphere.

Its a simple little application, not spyware or anything, no money involved. If there’s enough interest I’ll add a leaderboard to keep track of the winners and losers.

Let me know what you guys think. If you guys and gals want to give it a go, I’ll post download links for the client and start scheduling times to play.

Also, you’ll notice that the chat thingy has changed. I’m now running a flash IRC application that ties into our very own Hookers & Booze IRC server.

For those comfortable with IRC you can also connect with your favorite IRC client at irc.hookersandbooze.com port 6667 channel #hookersandbooze.
