Study: Heavy drinkers outlive non-drinkers

Posted by ArmedGeek on Monday, August 30, 2010 in News

Good news! [Yahoo! News]

One of the most contentious issues in the vast literature about alcohol consumption has been the consistent finding that those who don’t drink actually tend to die sooner than those who do. The standard Alcoholics Anonymous explanation for this finding is that many of those who show up as abstainers in such research are actually former hard-core drunks who had already incurred health problems associated with drinking.

But a new paper in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research suggests that -- for reasons that aren’t entirely clear -- abstaining from alcohol does actually tend to increase one’s risk of dying even when you exclude former drinkers

I’ve often wondered myself if these studies were skewed by “recovering alcoholics”.

Moderate drinking, which is defined as one to three drinks per day, is associated with the lowest mortality rates in alcohol studies.

There’s lots and lots of good stuff over there so go read it.

Welcome Home

Posted by ArmedGeek on Friday, August 20, 2010 in News, War

I’m sure you already heard about this but the other day George W. Bush showed up at DFW to welcome soldiers home. I’m quick to admit that there’s an awful lot about his work as POTUS that I was really unhappy about and I’m sure many of you feel the same. But you just can’t doubt that he’s a good man. This right here is a classy thing to do. He’s not running for any office or trying to score points with the public. He’s just doing his part to make the returning soldiers feel welcomed and appreciated.

How many soldiers have been personally welcomed home by the guy that sent them to war ?

Arizona to allow concealed weapon without permit

Posted by ArmedGeek on Saturday, April 17, 2010 in News

From AP:

Favoring the constitutional right to bear arms over others’ concerns about gun safety, Gov. Jan Brewer on Friday signed into law a bill making Arizona the third state allowing people to carry a concealed weapon without requiring a permit.

Heh. There is no media bias.

The measure takes effect 90 days after the current legislative session ends, which likely puts the effective date in July or August.

“I believe this legislation not only protects the Second Amendment rights of Arizona citizens, but restores those rights as well,” Brewer, a Republican, said in a statement.

Alaska and Vermont now do not require permits to carry concealed weapons.

The part of the story that really caught my eye was this:

Why the fuck would you use a picture of scary black rifles in a story about concealed weapons ?

Unemployment

Posted by ArmedGeek on Friday, April 16, 2010 in News

The data are oscillating about a slowly increasing value, indicating that, if anything, unemployment claims are increasing. That means that for the past 5 1/2 months, every time the administration has told us that the unemployment situation is slowly recovering, and that the data show “the right trend,” they have been absolutely mistaken.

Ace and his cohorts are all over Obamacare this week. If you aren’t over there every day, you really should be.

Where are we going ?

Posted by ArmedGeek on Thursday, March 11, 2010 in News, Rants

… and why are we in this handbasket ?

Drop the Weapon! Drop the Weapon! *BANG*

From Gothamist:

Just how little tolerance is zero tolerance? A Staten Island fourth-grader was reprimanded and almost suspended yesterday when the principal spotted him playing with a LEGO policeman and a two-inch-long toy gun during lunch, the Advance reports.

Under the city’s no-tolerance policy regarding guns in schools, PS 52 Principal Evelyn Matroianni brought 9-year-old Patrick Timoney to her office and called his mother to say the boy might be suspended for carrying the miniature toy gun to school, pending the approval of the Department of Education’s security administrator. When contacted, the administrator reportedly said the toy should be confiscated and returned to the boy’s parents, however no other punishment would be necessary.

How much would you pay for this kinda crazy ? Wait, don’t answer yet, there’s more …

From the NYDailyNews:

A Michigan kindergartener’s make-believe gun -- which he created with just his fingers -- got him suspended, the Grand Rapids Press reported.

Mason Jammer, 6, who attends Ionia’s Jefferson Elementary School, pointed his finger-gun at a fellow student Wednesday and got kicked out of school till Friday.

School officials said they had given Mason numerous warnings over several months, and his gun play created discomfort for other kids.

Now how much would you pay ? If you order this insanity in the next 5 minutes we’ll throw in this beautiful piece of shit:

New York to Ban SALT!

a bill introduced in the New York Legislature that, if passed, would ban the use of salt in restaurant cooking.

“No owner or operator of a restaurant in this state shall use salt in any form in the preparation of any food for consumption by customers of such restaurant, including food prepared to be consumed on the premises of such restaurant or off of such premises,” the bill, A. 10129 , states in part.

Sometimes its hard to even joke about this shit.

From the Speaker’s own website:

Speaker Nancy Pelosi delivered a speech this morning at the 2010 Legislative Conference for the National Association of Counties (NACo). This year marks the 75th anniversary of the organization. Below are the Speaker’s remarks:

But we have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it, away from the fog of the controversy.

Seriously .. what. the. fuck. ? I’ve never been much for insightful commentary but this just leaves me speechless … there really are no words. (aside from ‘what the fuck’).
