It’s a small but vital thing, y’all.

Personally, I feel a bartender’s relief when Nommie comes to visit. She not only helps herself to whatever is available, she is also content with what’s available. Unlike my sister, I don’t have to keep some obscure liquor here for her personal imbibification. And Nommie and I tend to have fun when we drink this week’s GDOTW.

When was the last time we had a true hero, and what did he do to deserve that title? I can think of this guy. Jumping into a vat of acid to save another? That’s heroism. Putting a controversial photo on the cover of a magazine? Not so much. Yet we are supposed to think that our “first gay president” is a courageous move, that his declaration of “personal support” for same sex marriage is an act of bravery. All he did was dodge a bullet and get paid for it. If he really wants to dodge bullets and get a paltry salary for it, he should enlist and get deployed. Maybe then he could be considered brave.

Auto legend Carroll Shelby died Thursday night at Baylor Hospital in Dallas at the age of 89.

A natural as a race driver, he won three U.S. sports-car championships in Ferraris and Maseratis, and for Aston Martin he won the 1959 24 Hours of Le Mans with British co-driver Roy Salvadori.

Donald “Duck” Dunn, the bassist who helped create the gritty Memphis soul sound at Stax Records in the 1960s as part of the legendary group Booker T. and the MGs and contributed to such classics as “In the Midnight Hour,” ‘’Hold On, I’m Coming” and “Sitting on the Dock of the Bay,” died Sunday at 70.

Dunn, whose legacy as one of the most respected session musicians in the business also included work with John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd’s Blues Brothers as well as with Levon Helm, Eric Clapton, Neil Young and Bob Dylan, died while on tour in Tokyo.

And apparently, none of you fuckers had either of them in the pool. I am disappoint.

Every year the kids ask me what I would like to do on that day. Every year the answer is the same: NOT COOK.

Of course, since everyone and their mother goes out to eat, I usually end up making dinner anyway. But the kids help, and they do the clean up, so it’s not bad. I think the fact that this day is just a regular, run-of-the-mill day for me is very comfortable. It makes me appreciate how much I like being a mom.

So, I would like to take the opportunity to thank the men who made us women, and the children who made us mothers. Without y’all, we would be nothing. Oh, I imagine some women would be single and partying every night, but most of us love what we do!!

And how will y’all be spending the day adoring the moms in your lives?

Texas Style Sangria

• 1 6oz can of frozen orange juice concentrate, plus one can of water
• 1 6oz can of frozen limeade concentrate, plus one can of water
• 1 liter of grapefruit soda
• 1 bottle Dry Comal Creek Foot Pressed Red Wine™

Blend limeade and orange juice concentrates with water. Add the wine, stirring well, then add the grapefruit soda, and stir well again. Freeze until slushy, or serve over ice if you are impatient, like me. Garnish with orange slices, or pass on the fruit if your impatient, like me

30 Minutes or Less is about a slacker pizza delivery guy who gets forced to rob a bank. The reviews of the movie aren’t great and if I paid $10 to see it in a theater I might agree. I didn’t. I Netflixed it. I thought it was decent. Not great and certainly not a movie you’ll remember in 2 years but it was funny and certainly worth the price of a rental.

The Green Lantern is another movie that got less than great reviews. Again, this might not have been worth the price of a theater ticket, but is certainly worth the price of a rental. Bonus: You get to watch Tim Robbins die a horrible death.

This was 102 minutes of my life I really wish I could get back. I didn’t think much of the first one and this is much much worse. Not only do I not recommend seeing this pile of shit, but if someone invites you to watch it, come up with some excuse. Your time would be better spent sitting at home and staring at the walls.
