Booze of the Week

The Booze of the Week is Bombay Sapphire (thanks, Aggie). Doing a little reading I found that this gin is made a little differently than other gins. Bombay Sapphire is triple distilled using a carterhead still, and the alcohol vapors are passed through a mesh/basket containing the ten botanicals, in order to gain flavor and aroma. This gives a lighter, more floral gin rather than the more-common ‘punchy’ gins that are distilled using a copper pot still.
Bombay Sapphire is a pretty good gin. It is very smooth; a gin drinker might probably drink this stuff straight. That’s the good and here is the bad. The smell is not that great. It smells similar to cheap aftershave. I know that sounds horrible but for me its no better or worse than smelling like a pine tree. The flavor of the botanicals is weak, barely perceptible.
I probably would not buy this myself, but neither would I turn it down if it was available. Tanqueray remains my standard gin.
Booze of the Week
This is a damned good gin. I’ve had this one on my shelf for a while but only recently cracked it open. For every type of booze there is a “definitive example”. Tanqueray is what gin is supposed to taste like. It will replace Beefeater as my standard gin.
Booze of the Week
The BotW is a bit of a combination of booze and cocktails. I’m still working through the gin section and I’m currently on Beefeater. I’ve about a half a fifth left. This morning I’m drinking a Tom Collins.
My first Tom Collins is:
2oz Gin
1oz lemon juice
1tsp simple syrupShaken with ice, strained into a tall glass half filled with ice. Top with club soda.
This is a very light drink. It is less bitter than a gin and tonic but leans more towards sour with the 1oz of lemon juice. The taste is decent, but I think at these measurements, the lemon just obliterates the taste of the gin.
Most of the recipes tend to vary in garnish. I used none. As the morning progresses, I’ll play with the mix a bit to see what ratios I like best. I will update this post as needed.
As a small reminder: I get that it seems odd to be hitting the bottle at 7am but I work nights and just got off of work. So, for me, it is early evening.
Gin or Booze of the Week update
I finally made it down to the liquor store to pick up a couple more bottles of gin.

I’ve killed the last of the New Amsterdam and have started on the Beefeater. Still doing gin & tonics. I can’t yet identify exactly what is different between the New Amsterdam and the Beefeater but it is certainly different. I’m going to try to get to making a martini with the Beefeater before I call it a day. If I succeed I’ll post the results in and update.
Oh, and this obviously starts another round of ‘find the stuff in the background’.
Update: The New Amsterdam is kinda “citrus-y” where the Beefeater leans more towards what I’ve heard people call “pine needle-y”
Booze of the Week
I’ve recently moved on to Gin. First, on the recommendation of the girl at the liquor store, I’ve chosen New Amsterdam Gin. Monday I intend to pick up a more traditional Gin (Beefeater) so I’ll have something to compare to.
First up is the Gin and Tonic.

I must admit I didn’t have much hope for this one but I was pleasantly surprised. I used a ratio of almost 1:1 Gin:Tonic, maybe 4:5. I had no limes so I tossed in a splash of lime juice. It made for a damn fine drink.
I’m sure you’ve all heard stories about gin hangovers especially when dealing with cheaper gin (which New Amsterdam is). I killed roughly 2/3 of the bottle in one morning and I must say the hangover was less than what I was used to and didn’t last near as long. This will obviously require further testing.
