Observation Point Restrepo

(Guest post by LC Draco)

The unit -- 2nd Platoon, Bravo Company, 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment (ABN), 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team

For those of you unaware of the name and the story, it is an outpost named after one of the first soldiers killed at that outpost in the Korengal Valley in Afghanistan (The Korengal Valley was regarded as “the deadliest place on Earth”). The story is about the soldiers who went in and set up an outpost in the middle of the night and how they fought to keep it!

If you have not seen the movie…GET IT, WATCH IT, then WATCH IT AGAIN!! It is an emotional, fierce and in-your-face documentary. It received the Grand Jury Prize for best documentary at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. (One of the directors, Tim Hetherington, was the photojournalist killed in Libya on 20 April, 2011).

But now…to the trailer at the official web site. It is a peek into one OP of many and what some of our soldiers go through every day.

R.I.P. PFC Restrepo and your brothers that died there with you. You and your brethren display the TRUE American soldier!!

UPDATE:

Restrepo, A Year In Afghanistan is going to be shown on National Geographic channel Monday 25 April at 9pm, Eastern.

Citizen Soldier

Posted by LC Aggie Sith on Sunday, April 17, 2011 in Everyday Hero, Music, War

(Guest post by LC Draco)

As a soldier who has been Reserve, National Guard and Active….this video (yeah, it’s a bit old) still makes my eyes mist a bit. It used to be (Pre 9-11) that the Guard and Reserves were considered second class soldiers. I know, because when I went from Active Duty to a short stint in the Guard, I had the same opinion. We all used to hear stories of Reservists and the Guard guys taking beer chests and coolers to their two week AT (Annual Training). And hell, they only met one weekend a month!! How can you be ready for combat with THAT limited time?

But I can assure you that mentality WILL never be like that again. Some Guard and Reserve units have deployed more than most Active units. I have personally trained Guard and Reservists on going on their third, fourth and fifth deployments. (I also deployed as a Reservist, so I have seen the look we get from Active soldiers! Little did they know I still had more Active and combat time than they did!!)

But to the video….and BTW, 3 Doors Down did this video for FREE!!! They did not ask for ANY money from the National Guard!!! TRUE PATRIOTS!!!

(I personally love the Blackhawk coming in with an Apache package support!! Been there, done that!!! And it IS a rush!!)

“Hope and pray that you never need me,
but rest assured I will not let you down….
I walk beside you, but you may not see me….
The strongest among you may not wear a crown!”

Bonus points if you can name the left shoulder patches in the first scenes without Google!! HINT- it is NOT New Mexico! And I trained this unit! :D

I *heart* My Town

Posted by LC Aggie Sith on Wednesday, March 23, 2011 in AssHatery, Idiotarians, Teh Funny

I do. I love living here. It has that small town feel, even though the population is in the seven figures now. Most of the excitement is usually reserved for gangs tagging and killing each other off on the Southside, BRAC bitching on the military bases, highway growing pains, and the like. Then, once in a while, you get the joys of idiotarianism:

The price of the Beefy Crunch Burrito had gone up from 99 cents to $1.49 and the man at the Rigsby Road Taco Bell drive-thru had just ordered seven.

The fast food customer was so disgruntled by the price hike he shot an air gun at the manager, displayed an assault rifle and pistol while in the restaurant’s parking lot, fled as police were called, and pointed one of his weapons at three officers who pulled him over. Fleeing when they opened fire, he barricaded himself in his hotel room — all over $3.50 plus additional tax.

The SWAT was called out, and a negotiator was smooth-talking the burrito freak off a metaphorical ledge for three and a half hours, until 6:30 PM, when presumably the SWAT got hungry for Taco Bell, and tossed tear gas into the idiotarian’s hotel room.

Now, nothing against Taco Bell, but I live in an area known for its Tex-Mex food, and to go insane over Taco Bell, when you have other authentic and even cheaper places to get your burrito fix is just… well, let’s just say he has to be a few chips short of a Nachos Bellgrande.

Yippee Ka YAY!!

Posted by LC Aggie Sith on Tuesday, January 18, 2011 in Politics

And y’all know the rest of the quote. In wake of the tragedy in Tuscon, Arizona, the Texas Legislature is hoping to move in the right direction concerning firearms. Namely, where one can carry:

Senate Bill 354 would allow students, staff, or anyone else with a concealed handgun permit to carry guns inside college classrooms or dorms, expanding on permit holders’ current right to carry them outside of campus buildings.

The bill is being introduced by San Antonio Senator Jeff Wentworth, and has been a subject of speculation in the legislature ever since the Virginia Tech shootings. The Senate had approved a bill before, but never got past the House. Now, with a two thirds Republican majority in the House, the bill has a very good chance of passing. FINALLY!!

If the bill passes, it will only apply to public colleges and universities. Private institutions will have the option of opting out, or make their own gun policies. Maybe I’m a bit of a cynic, but opting to stay a gun-free zone would place a that college in the crosshairs of any criminal looking for a massacre. As with any unbiased report, one has to include the dissenting opinions:

“I’m completely against it,” said UTSA Freshman Malcolm Ramey. “It sounds completely idiotic to me. To allow someone to carry a gun on campus? It’s like giving them permission to shoot someone.”

Asking a freshman?? Why not ask a senior? Why not ask an adult? This freshman is not allowed to have a CCW. One must be at least 21 years of age in order to have this permit. Hey, Malcolm, guess what? That’s EXACTLY what the permit is for. It gives the owner permission to carry his firearm and use it in case of attack with a deadly weapon. What if someone was shooting at you, Malcolm? Would you still be against a lawful carrier pulling out his or her gun to neutralize the criminal trying to take away your right to live?

I can understand not liking guns. There is no law forcing anyone to own a carry a gun here in Texas. More’s the pity ;) But I will never understand the propensity of people to keep the law-abiding citizenry from exercising their rights.

Saturday HOOAH!!!

Posted by LC Aggie Sith on Saturday, December 4, 2010 in Everyday Hero, War

This is a guest post by our friend, LC Draco:

Having spent time in ‘THE BOX”…I find it amazing bands still come and play for the troops. I do not think people understand the morale boost it is for those who spend years (yes… YEARS) away from their loved ones. This video (along with a 3 Doors Down video) hits home. Bad Company was and still is a favorite song and band of mine. But this video hits home for me. Complete with CH-47s, Cobra’s and CQB. (For you n00bs…CQB means Close Quarter Combat). For those in the know…PIE THE ROOM!!! ;)

Pure Awesomeness!!!

Arizona to allow concealed weapon without permit

Posted by ArmedGeek on Saturday, April 17, 2010 in News

From AP:

Favoring the constitutional right to bear arms over others’ concerns about gun safety, Gov. Jan Brewer on Friday signed into law a bill making Arizona the third state allowing people to carry a concealed weapon without requiring a permit.

Heh. There is no media bias.

The measure takes effect 90 days after the current legislative session ends, which likely puts the effective date in July or August.

“I believe this legislation not only protects the Second Amendment rights of Arizona citizens, but restores those rights as well,” Brewer, a Republican, said in a statement.

Alaska and Vermont now do not require permits to carry concealed weapons.

The part of the story that really caught my eye was this:

Why the fuck would you use a picture of scary black rifles in a story about concealed weapons ?

Smart Guns

Posted by ArmedGeek on Sunday, November 22, 2009 in Gadgets, Politics

Bob Owens of Confederate Yankee writes up a good piece about “smart guns”:

The simple fact of the matter is that technological hurdles are only part of the problem, and there are only very few people who have any real interest in seeing the technology come to fruition. Traditional defenders of gun rights have joined with their anti-gun foes to attack what both sides consider a gimmicky solution.

If CY isn’t a regular read for you, it should be.
