Snowday!!!

Posted by LC Aggie Sith on Friday, February 4, 2011 in Open Thread, Teh Funny

All day yesterday we kept hearing about how we in South Texas were going to get snow, zomg, blah, blah, blah. Ok, admittedly, compared to some of our readers to the North, this is mild. Ok, this is nothing. But for my town, this is history in the making:

I got a call from the school district’s automated system at 5:00 AM (because Deity forbid anyone with a pulse at the office be awake at that hour) to tell the parents there would be no school today. Well, understandable, considering under the snow is a sheet of ice, and we have no plows or salt or even sand to help with it. The Sounds of Silence outside are deafening :)

As for me, I plan to go out of my mind get drunk and hide bang my head against the table keep the kids entertained, as I help Hubby get ready to leave this Sunday. Oh, the joy…the rapture!!!

What are y’all doing on this balmy Friday? ;)

Yippee Ka YAY!!

Posted by LC Aggie Sith on Tuesday, January 18, 2011 in Politics

And y’all know the rest of the quote. In wake of the tragedy in Tuscon, Arizona, the Texas Legislature is hoping to move in the right direction concerning firearms. Namely, where one can carry:

Senate Bill 354 would allow students, staff, or anyone else with a concealed handgun permit to carry guns inside college classrooms or dorms, expanding on permit holders’ current right to carry them outside of campus buildings.

The bill is being introduced by San Antonio Senator Jeff Wentworth, and has been a subject of speculation in the legislature ever since the Virginia Tech shootings. The Senate had approved a bill before, but never got past the House. Now, with a two thirds Republican majority in the House, the bill has a very good chance of passing. FINALLY!!

If the bill passes, it will only apply to public colleges and universities. Private institutions will have the option of opting out, or make their own gun policies. Maybe I’m a bit of a cynic, but opting to stay a gun-free zone would place a that college in the crosshairs of any criminal looking for a massacre. As with any unbiased report, one has to include the dissenting opinions:

“I’m completely against it,” said UTSA Freshman Malcolm Ramey. “It sounds completely idiotic to me. To allow someone to carry a gun on campus? It’s like giving them permission to shoot someone.”

Asking a freshman?? Why not ask a senior? Why not ask an adult? This freshman is not allowed to have a CCW. One must be at least 21 years of age in order to have this permit. Hey, Malcolm, guess what? That’s EXACTLY what the permit is for. It gives the owner permission to carry his firearm and use it in case of attack with a deadly weapon. What if someone was shooting at you, Malcolm? Would you still be against a lawful carrier pulling out his or her gun to neutralize the criminal trying to take away your right to live?

I can understand not liking guns. There is no law forcing anyone to own a carry a gun here in Texas. More’s the pity ;) But I will never understand the propensity of people to keep the law-abiding citizenry from exercising their rights.

Ok, it isn’t 59th Street Bridge, or anything to do with Simon & Garfunkel. Just a few annotations of good news around the world:

Lou Ferrigno is now deputized by the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office to help patrol the Arizona border. I hope he goes the “Incredible Hulk” on the invaders.

Texas DPS is taking a stand, doing what our federal government won’t do.

Wesboro fucktards Baptist Church is picketing the Islamic Center of America in Dearborn, MI. The world runs out of popcorn, more at 11.

Wikileaks douchenozzle in trouble once again. Sweden attempts to establish serious street cred.

Texas A&M University sends a clear message to the new legislature. And they better pay attention.

And finally, scientists managed to create and capture anti-matter!! Time to start on the Illudium PU-36 Explosive Space Modulator. Get ready for an Earth-shattering Ka-BOOM!!!

Hope y’all’s day starts off on a groovy note :)

This weekend is the Red River Rivalry. As y’all know, I am an AGGIE, but I always observe the rule, “State Trumps Rivalry.” And observing that, here is to The University of Texas Longhorns goring the hell outta them pussified Oklahomo Sooners. May Texas keep the Golden Hat. And because I bumped a hooker:

GO HORNS!!!

My favorite is Lacey, second from the right. Brunette with an attitude. And y’all have no idea how hard this was to write….

Scent of a….State?

No, that’s not a typo. A company by the name Bond no. 9 has released a perfume exclusive to Texas, and to be sold through Saks Fifth Avenue stores in Plano, Houston, Austin, Dallas, and San Antonio.

Um, yeah…that’s the bottle. It’s covered in Swarovski crystals. But with a price tag of $360 a bottle, it should be come with two hookers and a bottle of whiskey. It is limited to a run of 400 (thank goodness), and sold through the month of August. The company claims it is supposed to smell like a “scenic tour through a southwestern garden”. Last I checked, the scent of cacti and dry-as-dust grass wasn’t that appealing, but hey, whatever flicks their Bic. ;)

Texas vs California

Stolen from here.

Black lines show inbound, red lines show outbound.

Two things I take from these images. First, I really wish those Yankee mother fuckers from New England would quit moving to Houston. Second, as many people fleeing LA you’d think it was on fire.

Happy Texas Independence!!

Over at Empirical Snarkery, Grackle brings to light several good questions and several good points about how we in this country manage to skip celebrating this day, but OMGFORBID that we let Cinco de Quatro*—I mean, Mayo, go by without proper *spit* respect. Some good observations:

You know, I find it sort of strange that the Mexican Army defeated the French Army at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. This gave Mexico Independence and is celebrated as Cinco de Mayo. Texas citizens celebrate this in every pub across the state.

I have never celebrated it. EVER. Why? Because as a Puerto Rican, I find it extremely disrespectful to celebrate another country’s independence. That’s like celebrating Arafat’s birthday in Tel Aviv. Not done!!! As Grackle states, we don’t celebrate Texas’ independence from Mexico the way that Cinco de Mayo is celebrated.

Perhaps Grackle’s best observation is this:

Perhaps the oddest twist is how in the hell was Mexico not able to defeat a couple thousand scrappy rag-tag Texans, but can defeat one of the then greatest armies on the planet? Granted it was the French Army, but it doesn’t really make much sense to me. I believe that the French Military is most interested in how they look in uniform over how they fight in uniform.

So, fuck all Santa Ana worshipping, Aztlan hopey changers out there. Ain’t EVER gonna happen. You see, Texas is a whole other country, one you will NEVER have.

Totally ripp- I mean, creatively borrowed from Empirical Snarkery.

The Goliad Massacre

Posted by LC Aggie Sith on Monday, March 29, 2010 in History

This Saturday, we found ourselves doing a bit of traveling to Goliad, Texas. It was on March 27th, 1836, that the infamous Goliad Massacre took place at Presidio La Bahia. Everyone knows the story of the Alamo, but few know about Goliad. It was the scene of the worst massacre in Texas history. There were 342 men murdered, with only 28 men escaping, with the help of the Angel of Goliad, and 17 being spared, due to the intervention of a colonel. This barbaric act by General Santa Anna cemented him as a cruel and brutal man, and rallied the people of Texas, along with the U.S., Great Britain and France, into defeating him and establishing the Republic of Texas.

As per Texas law, fields cannot be mowed until wildflowers have gone to seed. We had a spectacular view of Texas wildflowers: (more…)
